The consistency of Ramirez and the Pirates

Joey Ramirez

Coach Joey Ramirez and the Ventura Pirates program are one of the most consistent programs in the state. Since the 2015-2016 season, the Pirates have put together 97 wins, 3 outright conference championships and tied for two conference titles. Ramirez and company have put together a 46-8 record in Western State North Conference action since the same timeframe. It comes down to the “we play hard” motto and the tradition at the college located Northwest of Los Angeles on the coast. “The blueprint was set when I played here when Phil Matthews coached here,” said the 11th season head coach. Ramirez played for Matthews from 1992-1994 and played in the state final in 1994. Ramirez has now instilled that same winning culture. Trust was one of the first things the head coach mentioned when talking about the Pirate culture. “Coaches, players, have to have a certain level of trust,” said Ramirez. It is also about accountability and being able to embrace the process of everything. “The kids love the accountability as they are here for a reason, added Ramirez.

As far as recruiting, education and moving guys to the four year level, the Pirates have shown consistency in all oof the above. The Pirates have maintained between a 3.2-3.4 GPA the last ten years as education is stressed by Ramirez. It isn’t about taking classes in general but making sure guys are able to transfer out on time. “If you are not transferrable, then you are not eligible,” added Ramirez. Moving guys on is often under valued and winning is a higher priority but not at Ventura. “Its a challenge that we embrace as far as moving guys on,” added the head coach. The four year level for players is the ultimate goal, but adding winning to the agenda is what you get when you talk about the Ventura College Pirate program.
