South Coast South Conference
Last season in the South Coast South Conference, Cerritos and Los Angeles Southwest were the co champions. Both teams went on to make the post season as Cerritos came within one game of making the Elite Eight. Long Beach won 18 games but failed to make the post season and the other three teams did not finish above .500. This upcoming season, the South Coast South Conference looks to be an improved conference from top to bottom and it will be interesting to see how the upcoming 2021-2022 season shapes out in the near future.
2021-2022 South Coast South Conference Preview
Cerritos (20-10, 8-2): The Falcons had a solid 2019-2020 season as Cerritos College picked up 20 wins and were co champions of the South Coast South Conference. The Falcons went 8-2 in conference and earned an 8th seed in the post season. After picking up a win against Ventura, the Falcons lost against top seed Santiago Canyon in the sweet sixteen in the 2019-2020 season.
Cerritos returns four players back from their 20 win season in the 2019-2020 season. “6-6” Jaishon Forte returns to the Falcons after averaging 10.8 points and 7.7 rebounds in his freshman season. The wing has the ability to shoot the three ball and will be a solid threat for the Falcons this upcoming season. “6-6” sharp shooting Dorian Harris returns to the Falcons for his sophomore season. The wing averaged 9.9 points per game and the sophomore will be a floor stretcher and his numbers should go up in the upcoming season. “6-2” Cerroy Chenault (6.0 points), and “6-3” Josh Belvin (6.9 points) will also return to Cerritos for their sophomore season. “6-7” Andre Fields will add front court depth as the physical big man will force a middle for the Falcons. “6-8” Jackson Barnhill (Wilson HS), “5-9” Jalen Shores (Lakewood HS), “6-3” Xaiver Williams (Culver City HS), “6-3” Gordon Boykins (St. Anthonys HS), “6-2
Dennnis Johnson (Compton HS) and “6-5” Garret Bell (Sonora HS) will all look to contribute in their first season for the Falcons. Looking into the upcoming season, we have the Falcons as our favorites for the South Coast South Conference championship. Cerritos will be a team to watch and should make a post season run in the 2021-2022 season.
Los Angeles Southwest (17-11, 8-2): The Cougars will look to build off a solid 2019-2020 season in which Los Angeles Southwest won 17 games and finished tied for the South Coast South conference championship. The Cougars made a post season appearance as the 22nd seed but lost in the 1st round against San Diego City College.
Los Angeles Southwest does not return any players from their 2019-2020 season in which the Cougars won 17 games. The Cougars will have a lot of sophomore experience and transfers coming in to the 2021-2022 season. “6-10” Karl Jones will be the anchor in the front court as the big man comes in from Iowa Western CC. “6-6” Hinds CC transfer Damerius Wash comes into the team and will be an immediate impact. The former Kansas State commit will be a player to watch for the Cougars. “5-10” Brandon Fredrick, “6-1” Richard McMichael and “6-9” South Plains transfer Andre Rafus will all look to contribute this season. “6-3” Antione Bloxton (Tallahassee CC), “5-10” Cavin Page (Coahoma CC) will be players to watch this season for the Cougars. Coming into the season, the Cougars had 10 sophomores listed on the roster from the Socal Juco Jamboree. Experience will be key as we see Los Angeles Southwest competing for a conference championship and having a shot at making the post season. The Cougars have some solid pieces and we expect them to be a solid team in southern California for the 2021-2022 season.
Long Beach (18-10, 5-5): The Vikings will look to make the post season after struggling in conference action in 2019-2020. Long Beach put together a 13-5 non conference record but went 5-5 in conference play and missed the post season. The Vikings lost four of their last six games and Long Beach will look to have an improved 2021-2022.
Two players return off for the Vikings this upcoming season. “6-4” Khieem Williams returns for his sophomore season after averaging 8.7 points and 5.8 rebounds in his freshman campaign. “6-1” Miles Denmion returns for his second season and will provide sophomore experience to the Vikings. The freshman heavy team will welcome in plenty of newcomers for the 2021-2022 season. “6-6” Lorenzo Marsh (LB Poly HS) will provide a lot of versatility, “6-8” Kameron Mayhan (Elite Prep) has supberb athleticism, “6-4” Jose Acevedo (Volcano Vista HS- New Mexico), “6-3” Damajay Washington (TMG Prep), “6-0” Bonard Johnson (Lakewood HS), “6-3” Shane Hunter (Elite Prep), “6-0” Tremond Johnson (Warren HS), “5-10” Jackson Wimberly (San Pedro HS), and “6-4” Aaron Casilao (Bethel Baptist Christian) will look to contribute as freshmen this season. Long Beach will be very young but will be very competitive this upcoming season. The Vikings are usually a very solid team and we should see a team that will be in the mix of things with a solid chance to finish in the upper half of the conference.
Los Angeles Harbor (9-19, 3-7): The Seahawks will look to have a better year than their 9 win season in 2019-2020. Los Angeles Harbor finished 5th place in conference action and failed to make the post season.
The Seahawks do not return a single player from their 9 win team in 2019-2020. Los Angeles Harbor will have a brand new team and the Seahawks have some solid pieces for the upcoming season. “6-8” wing Dennis Cash will be a player to watch this season. The athletic wing made a solid showing at the Socal Juco jamboree and will make an immediate impact this season and be a four year prospect. “6-9” Abdul Ahmad will be another name to watch as the North Alabama transfer will add depth to the front court. “6-2” Kendal Parker (Redondo Union HS), “6-8” Colby Reed (Corona Centennial HS), “6-2” Demetrius Douglas (North Lawndale HS), “6-6” Louis Walker (Hamilton HS), “6-1” Jacob Lee (MLK Riverside HS), “6-5” Tyler Mapp (Serra HS) will all look to contribute as freshman for the Seahawks. Los Angeles Harbor will be an improved team for the upcoming season as Cash and Ahmad give them a boost, but will it be enough to push them into the upper half of the conference. The Seahawks will be a competitive bunch as we see them finishing in the upper half of the conference for the 2021-2022 season.
Compton (13-15, 5-5): The Tartars won 13 games in the 2019-2020 season and finished tied for third place in the South Coast South Conference. Compton missed the post season and will look to be competitive in the 2021-2022 season.
The Tartars do not return a single player back from their team that won 13 games but welcome in some sophomore transfers that will provide experience to the Southern California school. “6-5” Myles Wood leads the list of newcomers as the transfer from Orange Coast averaged 15.9 points and 4.2 rebounds in the 2019-2020 season for the Pirates. “6-4” Gabriel Aemian (Pasadena transfer), “6-9” Davonte Carrier (San Bernardino transfer), “5-11” Armen Safeyan (Pasadena transfer), “6-8” Jamal May and “6-7” Keyshawn Holmes will provide sophomore experience. “6-7” Justin Haynes (Westchester HS), “6-2” Mike Bilal (Washington HS), “6-9” Kevin Siakam (Herndon HS), “6-4” Denzel Okoli (St. Pius HS) will all look to contribute as freshman for the upcoming season. Compton will look to stay competitive but will they have enough depth to compete against the upper half of the conference. We saw the Tartars finishing in the lower half of the conference in the 2021-2022 season.
El Camino (6-22, 1-9): The Warriors will look to improve their last place finish from the 2019-2020 season. El Camino finished the season with 6 wins and finished in last place in the conference.
The Warriors do not return a single player off their 2019-2020 season that won six games. Head coach Cameron Jones takes over the program and will look to have a better season. “6-4” Gabriel Hubbard will look to have a solid season and provide sophomore leadership as the transfer from West Los Angeles College will look to have a solid upcoming season. “6-6” Massimo D’Amato (Strathmore Secondary), “6-8” Mattias Sjolin (Sierra HS), “6-5” Mauricio Cruz (Southeast HS), “6-4” Kenneth Chilson (Scale Prep), and “6-6” Elliot Kerley (Danum Academy) will all look to contribute this season for El Camino. The Warriors will look to stay competitive this upcoming season but lack of depth may be an issue. We see the Warriors being in the bottom half of the conference coming into the 2021-2022 season.
