The 2019-2020 season saw one team make the post season from the Coast South Conference. West Valley won the conference with an 8-4 record and beat Cabrillo twice which gave them the tiebreaker. Cabrillo won 16 games finished with the same record in conference action but failed to make the post season. Monterey which was 7-5 in conference action lost their last two games and fell to a third place finish. Overall the conference will be better from top to bottom in the upcoming 2021-2022 season.

2021-2022 Coast South Conference Preview

West Valley (17-11, 8-4): The Vikings are coming off a solid season as the defending Coast South Conference champions look to repeat in the upcoming 2021-2022 season. Last season, West Valley won 17 games and picked up the 11th seed in the post season. The Vikings went on to face Santa Rosa and lost on the road but the Vikings will look to have a better 2021-2022 season.

The Vikings come into the new season with high hopes after making a post season appearance a year ago. West Valley is a very talented team and the Vikings return four players from a team that won 17 games in 2019-2020. Leading the list of returners is conference player of the year candidate Ben Baker. The “6-2” all state guard returns for his second season after averaging 19.4 points and a team high 8.6 rebounds in 2019-2020. “6-9” Adam Afifi returns to the squad after averaging 13.9 points and 7.6 rebounds in his freshman season. The skilled big man showed out at the Socal Juco Jamboree as one of the best bigs in the state as he has the ability to step out and shoot the three. The sophomore has a lot of versatility which will be on display this season for the Vikings. “6-3” Sufyan Elkannan (9.7 points) and “6-2” Leland Estacio (6.8 points) will add depth to the back court as the duo returns after having solid freshman campaigns for West Valley. “6-6” Mahmoud Fofana (Santa Teresa HS) is a newcomer that many four year coaches should pay attention to. The freshman wing will bring athleticism and versatility this season to the Vikings. “6-2” Quinn Denker (Bellarmine Prep), sophomore Jacquez Walker, “6-5” Kai Lee (Carmel HS), “6-4” sophomore Adrian Johnson will all look to contribute this season for the Vikings. At the end of the day, West Valley is our favorite to win the Coast South Conference, the Vikings are a talented bunch that have size in the front court and are skilled in the back court. It would not surprise us if West Valley makes a deep post season run in Northern California for the upcoming 2021-2022 season.

Cabrillo (16-12, 8-4): The Seahawks will look to make it back to the post season after finishing 2nd place in the Coast South Conference a year ago. Cabrillo won 16 games but the school located in Aptos missed the post season in the 2019-2020 season.

The Seahawks return seven players off their 2019-2020 16 win season. “6-2” all conference guard Jonel Aponte leads the list of returners coming back for Cabrillo. The sophomore lefty averaged 12.5 points and 3.0 assists in his freshman campaign for the Seahawks. “6-5” Alphonse Alfred returns for his second season after an all conference season in his freshman year. Alfred averaged 9.1 points and 6.9 rebounds from the guard position. “6-6” Brandon Harmon (7.6 points), “6-9” Myron Dews (5.5 points), “6-10” D’Andre Johnson, “6-0” Brandon Monestime, and “6-5” Lachlan Knight will all provide sophomore experience to the Seahawks. “6-2” Austin James will be an impact newcomer for the Seahawks. The transfer from Monroe Community College will provide a scoring punch for Cabrillo. “6-6” Ronique Spencer, “6-1” Joe Rush (Warren Central HS), “6-6” Cainan Wright (Fort Scott CC), “6-2” Darius Best, “6-8” Samy Buteau (Celebration HS) and “6-2” Cameron Noel are all talented freshmen that will contribute for the Seahawks. The Seahawks have size, depth and a solid back court and Cabrillo will be right in the mix of things for the upcoming 2021-2022 season. We expect the Seahawks to make a post season push and make a run for the conference championship in the Coast South Conference.

San Jose (11-17, 6-6): The Jaguars will look to have a better 2021-2022 season after posting 11 wins in 2019-2020. San Jose missed the post season and finished in a tie for fourth place in the Coast South Conference.

The Jaguars will be another team within the Coast South Conference that should make a jump in the standings this upcoming season. San Jose will return four players off a team that won 11 games in 2019-2020. Leading the list of players return for their sophomore season is point guard Decaurey Brown. The “5-11” point guard averaged 21.3 points and 5.7 assists in his freshmen season. The guard posted 20 or more points 18 times and scored a season high of 33 points against Cuesta in his freshman campaign. “6-3” Trent Blackshire returns to the Jags as the sophomore averaged 15.1 points and 4.9 rebounds in his first season. “6-5” Demarri Floyd, “6-5” Jordan Gill (4.6 points) and “5-9” Bryan Nguyen (6.2 points) will all add experience to San Jose this season. Two impact transfers will provide depth and scoring punch this season as “6-7” Jaycson Bereal comes into the program from Johnson County Community College. The versatile wing averaged 13.5 points and 6.8 rebounds and four year programs all over the nation should make their way to see him play. “6-1” Matt McAndrews will add fire power to the back court as the guard averaged 20.1 points at Foothill College in 2017-2018 and should have an impact for the Jaguars. “6-4” David Galentine (Battle HS) will be an impact player for the Jaguars in his freshman campaign. He will bring athleticism and a high motor and will be a solid prospect at the four year level. “6-4” Lee Ridley (Milpitas HS), “6-2” Ryan Mason (Archbishop Mitty HS), “5-11” Armond Simmons (Moreau Catholic) and “6-0” Justice Owens (Pioneer HS) will all look to contribute this season for the Jaguars. Coming into the new season, San Jose will be a much improved team and will pass their 11 wins total from a year ago easily. We see the Jaguars competing for a conference title and a post season run as San Jose is a very talented team coming into the 2021-2022 season.

Gavilan (10-18, 5-7): The Rams will look to have an improved 2021-2022 after missing the post season in 2019-2020. Gavilan won 10 games and finished in 6th place in Coast South Conference action in the 19-20 season.

Gavilan looks to be an improved team after posting 10 wins in the 2019-2020 season. The Rams made a solid showing at the San Mateo Jamboree and look to a fairly competitive team for the upcoming season. Gavilan returns three players off their 2019-2020 team. “6-3” Tahjae Ordonio returns for his sophomore season after averaging 17.1 points and 5.0 rebounds as a freshman. The talented guard scored over 20 points nine times in his freshman season and scored a season high of 26 points against San Jose in conference action. “6-4” Deshawn Butler averaged 7.8 points and will add versatility to the Rams and “6-1” Mo Dia returns and will provide sophomore experience after starting most conference games in the 19-20 season. Monterey Peninsula transfer “6-2” Mohanid Adam and “6-6” Utah Valley transfer Cache Fields will also come in and contribute this season for the Rams. Gavilan added a lot of athleticism and have added some solid pieces. “6-6” Jailen Daniel-Dalton (Baton Rouge, LA), “6-7” Jaylin Williams (Columbus, GA), “6-4” do it all guard Suheil Ibrahim (Monterey HS), “6-5” Caleb Onuonga (Mountain View Academy), and “6-5” Devean Hinton (Libery HS) will all look to contribute this season. Gavilan will be a much improved team and with their athleticism we should see them have a much better season. The Rams should be a very competitive group and compete in the upper half of the conference in the 2021-2022 season.

De Anza (13-15, 6-6): The Dons struggled in the non conference part of their schedule in the 2019-2020 as De Anza lost nine straight games after winning their first two games of the season. When conference came around De Anza finished tied for fourth place and finished with 13 wins on the season. The Dons missed the post season and will look to have a better 2021-2022 season.

The Dons return one player off their team that won 13 games in 2019-2020. “6-7” Luke Sayre returns for his sophomore season after averaging 9.7 points and 5.3 rebounds in his freshman season. “6-9” Irnes Sarvan is a transfer from College of San Mateo and will add sophomore experience and size to the Dons. “6-3” Michael Steward is coming in from West Valley College, “6-1” Tim Oldham and “6-3” Caleb Predmore will add some sophomore experience to De Anza. “6-2” Omarian Thomas-Marshall (Bullard HS), “5-8” Shawn Packard (Bullard HS), “6-2” Tyler Kalinowsky (Willow Glen HS), “5-8” Ramon Smith (American HS), “5-11” Tobey Flores (Independence HS), “6-3” Jovan Abregana (Washington HS), “6-1” Vinny Fortunado (Scotts Valley HS), “6-3” Alex Harris (Homestead HS), “6-6” Chaziel O’Neal (Santa Clara HS), “6-8” Preston Weber (Leland HS), and “6-4” Michael Ortiz (Santa Teresa) are all listed on the 2021-2022 roster. The Dons will look to stay in the middle of the pack of the Coast South Conference this upcoming season.

Monterey Peninsula (11-17, 7-5): The Lobos finished the 2019-2020 with a losing record and posting 11 wins but were a force in Coast South Conference action. Monterey started off conference play winning their first four games after struggling in non conference action. The Lobos knocked off West Valley twice last year and were 7-3 in conference play but lost their last two games of the season and settled for missing the post season and a 3rd place finish.

Coming into the new season, Monterey Peninsula will return eight players off their 2019-2020 roster. This is the most by any other team within the conference. The Lobos which did not have a double digit scorer did it by committee and we expect them to play with a solid feel for eachother coming into the new season. “6-3” Jayden Madise (3.9 points), “6-3” Vincent Cooke, “6-5” Harkaran Sidhu (5.8 points), “6-5” Justen Miller (5.7 points), “6-6” Skyler Tuttle (3.4 points), “6-0” Darius Scott (7.9 points), “6-9” Gaawar Tuom, and “5-11” Ben Juarez all will be sophomores this upcoming season. This could be huge for the Lobos as a lot of players will be familiar with the system. “6-3” Chris Anderson (Hillcrest HS), “6-7” Parker Hunt (Palm Springs HS), “6-5″Adegoke Adeyemi (Deer Valley HS, and “6-4” Reed Samuels (Pacific Grove HS) will all be freshmen looking to contribute for the Lobos. Monterey should have a solid campaign and we should expect the Lobos to play solid basketball early on. In the 2019-2020 season, the Lobos struggled in non conference but with so many players returning this could help them out early. We expect the Lobos to be a solid team and compete in the middle pack of the conference in the 2021-2022 season.

Hartnell (6-21, 2-10): The Panthers will look to improve from their 2019-2020 campaign. Hartnell won 6 games and finished in last place in Coast South Conference.

The Panthers return one player from their team from the 2019-2020 season. “6-0” Marcus Granger returns for his sophomore season after averaging 3.0 points per game in his freshman season. Sophomore “6-4” Connor Brown is a transfer and will add scoring punch and depth to the back court. “6-5” Jimmy Harding (Centralia CC) will add scoring punch as well as the sophomore had a solid season at the NWAC school. “6-3” Tyler Biddison (Springville HS), “5-10” Aaron Garibay (Palma HS), and “6-5” Jack Licoln (Redshirt at Cal Lutheran) will be freshman that will be expected to contribute in the 2021-2022 season for the Panthers. The Panthers won six games in 2019-2020 and looking forward we expect Hartnell to be in the lower half of the conference for the 2021-2022 season. The lack of depth could hurt the Panthers in a very talented upper half of the conference for the upcoming season.
