Coast North Conference Preview
In 2019-2020 the Coast North Conference had five teams in the post season and all of those teams finished the season with winning records. Las Positas and Foothill suffered 2nd round losses and Chabot and San Mateo bowed out in the 1st round. City College of San Francisco was one of the dominant teams in the state as the Rams won 30 games and made a trip to the Elite Eight. The Rams were scheduled to face Riverside but Covid 19 abruptly ended the season. Coming into the season, the Rams appear to be one of the favorites to win the state championship and Chabot, San Mateo, and Las Positas seemed prime to make the post season.
2021-2022 Signal The Light Basketball Coast North Conference Preview
San Francisco (30-0, 14-0): The Rams had a sensational 2019-2020 as San Francisco was the only undefeated team in the state. The Rams went undefeated in Coast North Conference action and were on a 30 game winning streak going into the Elite Eight. San Francisco had the top seed in Northern California and the Rams were scheduled to face Riverside after winning two games to get to Lemoore before Covid 19 ended the 2019-2020 season.
City College of San Francisco will look to continue their dominance throughout the state coming into the 2021-2022 upcoming season. The Rams return two players off there 30 win team from the 2019-2020 season. “6-6” Ezekial Holman returns after having a solid freshman season. Holman returns after averaging 11.6 points and 4.4 rebounds in his first season. “6-6” Seyi Reiley is back after averaging 6.8 points and 5.5 rebounds in his freshman season. One of the high flyers in the state, Reiley is expected to have a bigger role and it wont surprise us if he averages a double double this season with his high motor. “6-4” Naseem Gaskin will come into the program after redshirting at the University of Montana as the guard will provide athleticism and will be an impact player at the point guard position for the Rams. The Rams are loaded and have some solid pieces coming into the new season. “6-4” Devin Sapp (Archbishop Mitty HS) is a big time scorer that will the ability to stretch the floor as well. “6-0” Jamir Thomas (Berkley HS) is a big time shooter, “6-3” Wrenn Robinson (St. Ignatius HS), “6-4” Emmett Neal (Balboa City) all will be guards to watch this season for the Rams. “6-10” Matthew Fegurgur (Guam) and “7-0” Mezziah Oakman (Mt. Diablo HS) are two front court players that are difference makers. “6-4” David Hector (Mareau Catholic HS), “6-3” Matthew Williams (Edward C. Reed HS), “6-8” Nathan Ilunga (Belgium) and “6-7” Malcolm Steadman (James Logan HS) are freshman standouts as well. City College of San Francisco is loaded again and will be one of the best teams in the state in the upcoming season. We expect the Rams to have a standout season and are our favorites to win the Coast North Conference. The Rams will be in the mix for a state championship run in the 2021-2022 season.
Chabot (17-12, 8-6): The Gladiators will look to have an improved 2021-2022 after posting 17 wins in 2019-2020. Chabot finished in the three way tie for 3rd place and made it to the post season. In the playoffs, Chabot picked up a 15 seed and suffered a 1st round loss against Diablo Valley to end their season.
The Gladiators come into the new season as a team to watch in Northern California. Chabot returns two players from the 2019-2020 season. “6-0” Isaiah Veal is a solid point guard and will run the show for the Gladiators. The sophomore averaged 6.5 points in his freshman season. “6-8” Skylar Robinson is another standout that will return for Chabot as the sophomore averaged 6.3 points and 4.7 rebounds in his first season. “6-6” Christian Pitcher (transfer Lewis and Clark) and “6-5” Isaiah Saams Hoy (Cal State East Bay transfer) are two wings that are going to make a huge impact for the Gladiators and both players should be on the radar of four year universities across the nation. “6-0” Diggy Winbush (LA Sports Prep), “6-3” Jaiden Riveria (Golden State Prep), “6-9” David Ogunleye (Stephen F. Austin HS), “6-6” Malik Kaba (Oakland Tech HS), and “6-7” Patrice Nganatcha (Stephen F. Austin HS) are all players that will contribute and be in the rotation for the Gladiators. Looking deeper into the upcoming season, Chabot is a team that we expect to have a solid season. The Gladiators are loaded and a team that will look to look to challenge San Francisco at the top of the Coast North Conference. We expect the Gladiators to make the postseason and have a solid 2021-2022 season.
San Mateo (14-15, 8-6): The Bulldogs finished the regular season with a 14-14 record in the 2019-2020 season. San Mateo posted 8 wins in conference and earned a post season bid after finishing tied for 3rd place in Coast North Conference action. San Mateo was seeded 19th in the post season and suffered a 1st round loss against Alameda to end their season.
The Bulldogs return three players from their 2019-2020 team that made the post season. “6-2” Bobby Arenas returns for this sophomore year after having a breakout freshman season. The second year guard averaged 17.0 points and 6.1 rebounds, and the guard made 71 three pointers and shot 38% from downtown for the Bulldogs. “6-3” Desai Lopez returns after averaging 9.7 points and 4.8 rebounds and “6-3” Reynaldo Phillips is another sophomore that averaged 6.6 points and will add depth to the back court this season. “6-7” Sam Manu will be a player to watch as the sophomore transfer from City College of San Francisco is expected to have a solid season for San Mateo. “5-11” Isaiah Cabera and “6-6” Ben Pate are two other sophomores that will add experience. “6-2” Saveon Campbell (San Lorenzo HS), “6-9” Muti Shuman (Serra HS), “6-1” Kory McCoy (Sacred Heart Cathedral), and “6-9” Pearse Uniacke (Serra HS) will be freshman that will look to contribute in the upcoming season. San Mateo will be a team that will make a push to be in the post season. The Bulldogs have some good pieces and we expect San Mateo to finish in the upper half of the conference in the upcoming 2021-2022 season.
Las Positas (20-9, 10-4): The Hawks had a solid 2019-2020 as Las Positas finished with 20 wins and made a post season appearance. The Hawks finished with 10 wins in conference and finished in 2nd place in the Coast North Conference. The Hawks picked up a 13 seed in the post season but suffered a 2nd round defeat against Yuba to end their 2019-2020 season.
The Hawks will look to have another solid season coming into the 2021-2022 season. Las Positas has two players that will return for the upcoming season from the 2019-2020 season. “6-0” Lee Jones Jr. will return for his sophomore season after posting 9.8 points and 4.6 assists in his freshman season. “5-9” Nikko Echalas will provide sophomore experience after averaging 4.5 points in his freshman year. “6-3” Dathan Satchell (Casper JC), “6-2” Jorge Cedano (Stanislaus State transfer) will be two transfers that will provide depth in the back court for the Hawks. “5-11” Thomas Gregorios (De La Selle HS), “6-5” Domonick Victor (Manteca HS), “6-8” Jordahn Johnson (Weston Ranch HS), “6-5” Evan Johnson (Capital Christian HS), “6-7” Brandon Fisher (Sheldon HS), “6-6” Malik Jackson (Dublin HS) and “6-1” Jorren Edmonds (Washington HS) will look to contribute this upcoming season. Las Positas will look to have a competitive season as the Hawks have been one of the more consistent teams in the state when it comes to winning. We expect the Hawks to make a post season run and be in the mix with the with Chabot and San Francisco in the upper half of the conference.
Skyline (12-15, 5-9): The Trojans will look to have a better 2019-2020 after posting 12 wins. Skyline finished 6th in the Coast North Conference after winning 5 games and the Trojans missed the post season.
Coming into the new season, the Trojans will return three players off their 2019-2020 roster. “6-0” Colby Vasquez returns for his sophomore season after averaging 14.6 points and 4.3 rebounds in his freshman season. The combo guard was 2nd team all Coast North Conference in his first season and is expected to have another solid season. “6-1” Elijah Flowers returns for his second season after averaging 9.3 points per contest in his freshman year and will add depth to the Trojans back court. “6-0” David Avak returns for his sophomore season after averaging 5.9 points per contest. “6-5” DeAndre Minor and “6-3′ Connor Strambi will be two other sophomores that will provide depth with shooting and athleticism. “6-5” Julius Alcantara (Serra HS), “6-1” Justin Milch (Terra Nova HS), and “6-9” Toyoshige Kano (Riordan HS) will be freshman that could contribute this upcoming season. The Trojans have a solid back court coming back this season and Strambi will come in and stretch the floor. We expect Skyline will be a team that will be competitive and will be in the middle of the pack for the upcoming season.
Canada (3-23, 1-13): The Colts struggled in 2019-2020 and will look to have a better season. Canada won 3 games and finished in last place in the Coast North Conference. The Colts won one game in conference and will look to have a competitive upcoming season.
Canada will look to have a better upcoming season as the Colts will have a new head coach on the sideline. Eddy Harris will look to bring more wins to the table as the longtime Skyline College assistant coach will start a new era of Canada basketball. The Colts will have a brand new team and welcome in some transfers and incoming freshman for the 2021-2022 season. “6-2” Aaron Tumber (Transfer from Foothill), “6-2” Tyler Moore and “5-9” Alfonso Miranda (Transfer from Skyline) will provide sophomore leadership and experience this upcoming season for the Colts. “6-5” Jevon Jesus (Serra HS) will be a freshman that will have an impact this season for Canada. Jesus will bring athleticism to the Colts for the upcoming season. “5-10” Lawvan Johns (Sacred Heart Cathedral), and Dahareeha Allen (San Mateo HS) will be freshman that could provide solid roles for the upcoming season. We expect the Colts to be a competitive bunch but will struggle against the upper half of the conference. Canada will be an improved team but we expect them to be in the middle of the pack and have a competitive season.
Ohlone (4-24, 2-12): The Renegades had a tough 2019-2020 season after finishing in 7th place in the Coast North Conference. Ohlone won four games and missed the post season after picking up 2 Coast North Conference wins.
The Renegades will look to have an improved 2021-2022 season. Ohlone will not return a single player from the 2019-2020 for the upcoming season and will welcome in four juco transfers and some solid incoming freshman for the season starting next week. “6-9” Melvin Ely Jr. (Midland College), “5-9” Kenry Jordan (Chabot JC), “6-2” Jorden Gilmete (Chabot JC), and “6-3” Caleb Beltz (College of the Canyons transfer) will all provide sophomore experience for the upcoming season. “6-6” Anthony Russell (Antioch HS), “6-3” Cameron Thomas (Beachwood HS), “6-3” Shasta Ravi (James Logan HS), “5-10” RJ Miller (Mase HS), “6-1” John Patague and “6-1” Winston Wu (Irvington HS) will all be freshman looking to contribute for the Renegades. Coming into the new season, the Renegades will look to be competitive and put together an improved season. We expect Ohlone to be in the bottom half of the conference but should have more wins under their belt when the 2021-2022 season is over and done.
Foothill (17-12, 8-6): The Owls won 17 games in the 2019-2020 season and finished in a third place tie in the Coast North Conference. Foothill picked up a 10 seed in the post season but suffered a loss against Mendocino to end their 2019-2020 campaign.
The Owls will come into the new season with one player back from the 2019-2020 roster and a new head coach on the sidelines. Former Canada College head coach Mike Reynoso will be on the sidelines for the upcoming season. “6-5” Ausage Siamu will be a player that is back from the 19-20 season after the sophomore averaged 6.5 points and 3.3 rebounds per contest as a freshman. “6-0” Myles Nunez will also return to the Owls after averaging 7.3 points in 2018-2019. Reynoso has brought in some solid players who will look to contribute this season. “6-1” Kingsley Cockburn and “6-4” Chris Brahma are two sophomores that will look to play a key role for the upcoming season. “6-5” Jalen Williams is a freshman and a player that should have an immediate impact for Foothill. “6-5” Richie Corona, “6-5” Ethan Jew (St. Ignatius HS), Chase Durkee (Albany HS), Goodwyn Dickson “6-7” (Profilic Prep), and “6-4” Kainoa Mayo (Valley Christian HS) are all freshman that could contribute for the Owls for the upcoming season. Looking into the upcoming season, the Owls will look to stay in the upper half of the conference. We expect the Owls to be in the middle of the pack in the Coast North Conference and be a competitive team in the 2021-2022 season.
